Welcome to My Journey

Welcome to My Journey

A Vegan in Washington D.C.

A Vegan in Washington D.C.

Our Nation’s Capital is such a wonderful place to visit.  I went a couple of times as a kid with my family.  My husband, Luis, had to go for a couple days for a conference.  He usually has trips during the school year and I never get to go, this time I am so glad I was able to join him.  We got to spend some time together visiting different places and museums, and we got to walk a lot and got many many steps in.  That was probably one of my favorite parts about being there.  Every place we went to, we walked.  We stayed in a hotel downtown so most of the museums and monuments were over a 30-minute walk.  Another thing I loved about being in D.C. was discovering their vegan food.  There were so many restaurants that I did not have enough days to get to them.  Here are some of the ones I did get to.

Our first day there we spent the majority of the day walking around and sightseeing.  We were having such a great time, we did not realize it was close to 8:00.  We noticed that many places in our walking distance closed at 9.  We had to act and walk fast.  Luckily we found a great place and had great food.   We ate at Poke Papa.  This place has Hawaiian inspired bowls.  Poke Papa is not all plant-based but they do offer vegan substitutions.  They have tofu as a protein, however, I am not a tofu fan, so they helped me create a filling bowl.  It has a little bit of everything in it, but my favorite parts are the pineapple and mango pieces.

For breakfast, we ate at Fruitive.  This was probably less than a five-minute walk from our hotel downtown.  This restaurant is 100% plant-based, and they served organic cold-pressed juice, and everything is made from scratch.

I ordered a Golden Mango Waffle which was made with mango, coconut flakes, whipped coconut cream, chia seeds, and maple syrup.  It was incredibly delicious.  Luis ordered Almond Banana Toast which was flax and spelt bread, almond butter, banana, maple syrup and cacao nibs.  He loved it.  Of course, we both ordered a cold-pressed juice.  We got Beet Faster which is beet, carrot, cucumber, lemon, celery, ginger, and turmeric.  And also, Brighten Up which is green apple, beet, red apple, lemon, ginger.  Everything was absolutely delicious.  I recommend it and cannot wait to go back and try something different.

For lunch, I was on my own, so I walked to Fare Well.  This is a cute bakery, diner, and bar all in one.  All their ingredients are plant-based.  I had to try their Buffalo Cauliflower Dip.  I love anything with buffalo sauce.  Buffalo wings were one of my favorite foods as a non-vegan, so when I have the chance to be able to eat it, I do. This buffalo sauce was made with cashew cream, and it was delicious.  I also tried their Pierogi App, made with garlic and onion potato.  It came with sauerkraut, but I asked them to keep that part because I am not a fan.  These pierogis were amazing.  I love finding my favorite foods and eating them vegan.  It shows that just about anything can be made plant-based.  The service there was amazing.  Everyone was super nice and accommodating.  I ate at the bar by myself, and everyone was so friendly, I did not feel awkward.

For dinner, we attended an event at Luis’s conference so I ate some salad.  The next morning he brought me up some breakfast from his conference breakfast meeting.  It was so nice having breakfast in bed, and we saved some money.  Eating out at all these places are fun, but gets expensive.

For lunch I was on my own again so after exploring some museums I walked to HipCityVeg.  This restaurant is in Chinatown in downtown D.C.  Their philosophy is “Eat Well, Feel Good- Embracing healthy bodies, a healthy planet, and compassion for all living things, we bring delicious vegan food to people  everywhere.”  They have a “fast food-inspired menu with fresh, often local and organic ingredients that help you treat your body well.”  They take fast food and turn it vegan.  I enjoyed their DISCO CHICK’N, made with grilled chick’n, organic smoked tempeh, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, & organic soy mayo.  I also had some sweet potato fries.  Everything was amazing.  It is a fast food place, so you order, and wait, and eat.

Our last dinner there was kind of a hike from our hotel, and once we got there we noticed it did not seem like it was a good part of town.   However, that did not stop us or anyone else from going.  When we got there the place was full of people.  We saw that as a good sign.  Nuvegan is the place to eat!  I was told I had to try their Vegan Mac and Cheese, and it was incredible.  Honestly, it was better than any regular Mac and Cheese.  I also had their Vegan Lasagna.  I know, carbs served with carbs!! I knew I had a long walk home, so it was worth it! Luis had their Vegan Chicken Tenders and Garlic Kale.  He says he can still taste the garlic.  The chicken tenders had such an amazing taste that truthfully you could not tell it was not chicken. This picture does not do the food justice, trust me!

There are so many other places that I did not have time to visit.  Hopefully, the conference is in D.C. again next year and I can discover more.  I had so much fun visiting a different city and trying their vegan cuisines.  I love how even though I was away from home and was not able to cook my own meals, I was able to enjoy Conscience Living in D.C.

Here are some other pictures of us enjoying the sights!

D.C. was so gorgeous at night!  I love the Washington Monument. I  could stare at it and takes pictures of it all day.

And here are my most steps for that week.  The highest amount of steps yet!

I would love to hear about the places you traveled to and tried their amazing food.  Let me know!

Awaken Your Inner Self,

Carol
