For me, Spring is a season of change. Time to change to spring clothes and put the sweaters away. Time to change to spring decorations and put all winter away.
Now is also the time to start planting some seeds. Planting seeds in early spring mean you will have what you need in a couple weeks to a couple months, depending on what you plant.
Basil, mint, parsley, and sage are easy ones to grow in the spring. You can start these seeds inside near a sunny window, then transplant them to your garden in early summer. Or plant them outdoors in late spring. I love starting my herbs from seeds. It is so cool and amazing to watch them grow. I live in Florida so I start mine in a small pot and keep it outside in a sunny spot, making sure it gets enough sunlight and water.
Some easy vegetables to grow include, spinach, lettuce, radish, kale, and tomatoes. All of these you can start in pots and later replant to a garden or bigger pots if needed.
In my old house, we used to have a garden. It was so fantastic to plant different vegetables and see what grows and how well. We started off pretty basic with herbs and radishes. We also tried growing cucumbers. We never had much luck with cucumbers because we would get squash bugs that would eat the plant before anything could grow. We learned early on that growing peppers from seeds was near impossible, so we would buy those already started. Once they started to grow, they were fine. My husband made some homemade hot sauce with his spicy peppers. Tomatoes are very easy to grow. Make sure you have something for the vines to hang on to and you are set. We also had some banana trees that took some years to grow, but when they did, it was awesome to see and eat!
Where we live now, we grow our herbs and vegetables in pots. Right now we have mint, sage, and some basil. I am going to plant more seeds for herbs, and maybe get some peppers and tomatoes. It is such a great feeling cooking with something you just plucked fresh from your garden. I encourage everyone to try to plant something edible. See how it goes. Start small, and then grow from there.
I would love to see pictures of your gardens of herbs and vegetables and whatever else you grow! E-mail them to me or post them to my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/theconscienceliving/
